Park Boundary Map

The original boundaries of Fort Fisher Park (also referred to as Lake Brazos Recreation Park and Lake Brazos Recreation Area) encompassed 35 acres, including all of First Street Cemetery.  A written description and map of the boundaries from the City of Waco's grant proposal is available here (see also this map, an annotated version of a boundary map published in Waco Heritage and History, Vol. 4, No. 2, 1973).

The undated map of First Street Cemetery below was produced by the City of Waco prior to the construction of Fort Fisher Park, probably in 1967 or 1968.  The red line shows planned boundary of the camping area at the park.  The handwritten notation below the red line reads "All graves this side of line to be moved."  Historical and archaeological evidence indicates that this was not done.  Though the headstones were relocated, very few of the hundreds of marked and unmarked graves were actually moved (perhaps only one and almost certainly less than twenty).  See "Renovation" Plats page for information regarding the relocation of headstones.  This map was provided by the City of Waco.  (Click on image to enlarge.)
